Event Description:
Experience World Cultures at Children’s Museum International Festival
 
Crafts, cuisines and entertainment from world cultures will be presented at the Children’s Museum of Oak Ridge International Festival from 10 am-4 pm Saturday, Feb. 28.
 
The family-friendly International Festival will have musical and dance entertainment on stage throughout the day at the Children’s Museum, 461 West Outer Dr., Oak Ridge. Children may “make and take” crafts, and several booths will offer activities and crafts for children.
 
Featured entertainers include Katrien Sevrin of Belladance, who performs and teaches Middle Eastern dance; the Tennessee Irish Dancers, students taught by professional and champion Irish dancer Katie Carver; a Shamisen performance on a Japanese banjo-style instrument; the St. George Greek Dancers, Knoxville Pipe and Drums, Rosa de Flamenco, and the Oak Ridge Folk Dancers.  
 
Emcees for the International Festival will be Olivia Dague and Sarah Oppmann of WBIR. Dague, a native of Texas, is a graduate of the University of Oklahoma. Oppmann is a native Tennessean and a graduate of MTSU.  Both have worked at WBIR since 2023.
 
All performances will take place in the CMOR gym. The entertainment schedule for the event is:

Other activities during the day throughout the museum include:
  • Crafts for children to make and take home, including a bonsai tissue paper craft representing Japan, an African Painted House craft, and a colorful parrot craft representing Latin America.
  • Postage stamps from many countries will be available for collecting in the Craft & Science Room, hosted by the Knoxville Philatelic Society.
  • Opportunities to learn Morse code and how to communicate with other countries through amateur radio, hosted by the Oak Ridge Amateur Radio Club in the Discovery Lab.
  • Visits to the model train layouts of the Knoxville Area Model Railroaders in the World of Trains exhibit.
 
Food vendors will have food and beverages from many countries available to purchase. They will include Greek sweets and pastries from the St. George Greek Dancers; traditional Indonesian food and beverages from Dupar Mia and Warung Tenda; Matcha tea and onigiri (rice balls) from the Asian Culture Center of Tennessee; and Venezuelan and Cuban foods from Mucho Gusto 4 U.
 
Hola Hora Latina, an organization promoting unity by creating bridges between the Hispanic/LatinX communities and the community at large through art, culture, education and leadership will host an information booth. They will sell handmade imported jewelry, crafts and toys from Mexico, Central, and South America.
 
Other booths include children’s activities from the Tennessee Irish Dancers, a Shamisen display and Japanese craft sales from Shamisen Knoxville, Eveling Monsalve with jewelry and other items for sale from Colombia, and an information booth from Bridge Refugee Services. The Children’s Museum will also have small international items for sale.
 
The International Festival is sponsored by Howard Hildreth Insurance and supported by the Tennessee Arts Commission, WBIR, and B97.5 FM. Admission to the International Festival at the door is $14 for adults, $13 for seniors, and $12 for children 2-17. Children 1 and under are free. Children’s Museum members have free admission with proof of membership at the door.
