JOB SUMMARY: The Sports & Recreation Ministry Director develops, plans, and manages sports and recreation programs for Emerald Youth Foundation’s assigned neighborhood, connecting and engaging with young people in the community, offering an avenue for youth to engage in a multi-sport offering allowing them to become physically and spiritually active, and instilling life-long active lifestyles. This role will recruit players, coaches, and volunteers for neighborhood sports and recreation program, execute core sports as assigned, implements and expands recreational opportunities, works closely with neighborhood & city rec sports teams providing facility access, and is the liaison for the urban FCA ministry in the neighborhood. The director organizes programming and upholds quality of the offerings; allowing Emerald to engage in the community and broaden its reach in the city, helping to enable a strategy for day-to-day sports ministry that helps young people become *comprehensively engaged, and achieve critical youth development outcomes.
ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES:
- Work with the sports team to develop and implement approaches that identify and recruit neighborhood participants to connect with Emerald Youth middle school, neighborhood, and competitive sports programs, ensuring comprehensive engagement in faith, learning, relationships, and health.
- Implement each middle school and neighborhood sports season within the assigned parameters provided by Soccer and Gym Sports Directors. Manage teams for the assigned neighborhood and middle school, including the recruitment of players and coaches, collection of fees, distribution of uniforms, organization of teams, the scheduling and implementation of practices and games including referees, scorekeepers, clock operators, etc. if at neighborhood facility, and organizing parent meetings and celebrations. Ensure participation in leagues, camps, clinics, tournaments, tryouts, training, and special events with city-wide sports team. Work with assigned school/s to support the organizing of campus sports teams.
- Market competitive team offerings to neighborhood. Be present at tryouts and visit teams during season. Oversee and manage any competitive sports teams representing the neighborhood, working closely with coaches to ensure teams are assembled, appropriately trained, compete in competitive leagues, and engage more long term.
- Offer recreational activities in neighborhood as needed. Discuss offerings with Director of Area Ministry.
- Coordinate and/or arrange transportation for sporting events as needed. Ensure all guidelines are followed.
- Ensure target numbers of youth and young adults are relationally and comprehensively engaged using sports offered by Emerald Youth or partnering organizations, while valuing and upholding Emerald sports philosophy.
- Implement the recruitment system for sports and recreation programs that will help identify, recruit, engage, support, and retain neighborhood youth and young adults to participate in the Emerald Youth neighborhood and competitive sports programs.
- Develop relationships that lead to family engagement with Emerald Youth Foundation. Connect uninvolved participants to neighborhood programs, as needed.
- Identify coaches, volunteers, and FCA chaplains for teams and attend sports league meetings as needed. Work with HR to ensure appropriate background screenings are conducted on coaches and other program volunteers.
- Be the liaison for the urban FCA ministry partnership in the neighborhood. Develop huddles at identified schools, and ensure coaches/chaplains are trained in and utilize FCA curriculum. Work with program development to ensure FCA and Emerald Youth consistently align in themes and values.
- Ensure constraints or leakage are identified that could keep children, youth and young adults from being comprehensively engaged or meeting outcomes. Seek solutions working collaboratively with others to attempt and resolve issues so youth can move forward in ministry initiatives.
- Work closely with human resources in the selection process of new team members. Recruit, communicate, and engage relationally with core volunteers, coaches, and AmeriCorps members and ensure team does the same. Ensure candidates are screened through human resources and volunteers and players are entered into the student and volunteer database. Create a culture for securing support from indigenous population in both volunteering and employment, and manage HR people systems in area. Thank volunteers and closeout season.
- Manage, train, and hold accountable staff to develop objective performance measurements across sports and recreation initiatives to ensure consistent high-quality performance is met and development opportunities are recognized and addressed. Train staff and coaches in areas as needed and serve in training role through Emerald University or during sports trainings as needed. Instill and encourage spiritual disciplines for all members and help the team to grow and become better through high standards, discipleship, and modeling the teachings of Jesus Christ.
- Coordinate with communications staff to promote programs and confirm standardization branding between all sports is cohesive and compliant with organizational standards. Ensure team and uniform branding is prevalent, including FCA where applies. Consult communications team in identifying and developing recruitment materials for participants and coaches.
- Ensure that sports and recreations programs for the neighborhood maintain sound fiscal management by ensuring compliance with organizational policies and procedures; and developing and maintaining sports related budgets for assigned area and ensure budget compliance with direct reports that have spending authority. Submit budget recommendations as required. Responsible for and working with identified team members to ensure assigned revenue is generated through sports programs; including tournaments, fees, and camps.
- Track and report participation, BMI, and outcome data as required, provide measurements as needed, and create and analyze reports to create improvement plans. Participate in neighborhood meetings to help ensure target numbers of young people are getting comprehensively engaged.
- Follow, implement, and ensure safety rules, regulations and procedures are followed; ensures gym sports staff, AmeriCorps, and volunteers are trained in safety procedures.
- Participate in area ministry network and organization events and internal and external sports league meetings, including working outside normal schedule as needed. Identify, support, and engage in network activities (i.e. camps, etc.) as needed.
- Maintain a current CDL and drive large vehicles/buses as needed.
- Be the liaison with neighborhood sports programs as assigned by the Director of Area Ministry.
- Deliver effective and timely communication and ensure staff does the same.
- Manage additional projects and tasks as assigned, and participate with any assigned groups or committees.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
- Dedicated Christian with clear knowledge of the Gospel and a passion for the mission of Emerald Youth Foundation; connected to a church community; possesses a strong reputation for honesty, integrity, and high moral standards.
- Sports Management or related bachelor’s degree preferred.
- Experience as collegiate athlete preferred.
- 3-5 Years of Experience in a similar role.
- Experience working in business or non-profit management strongly preferred.
- Experience managing people.
- Proficient in using technology as a management reporting tool and communication tool.
- Excellent written and oral communication skills and business acumen.
- Ability to achieve results under pressure and meet deadlines.
- Good driving record. Ability and willingness to obtain CDL with P endorsement and drive large vehicles/buses.
- Willingness to work extended hours.
- Ability to work efficiently in a collaborative setting.
